Today’s scrap busting project is this nifty little cake banner.

As a sewist who is still trying to perfect the craft, I feel like I collect a lot of small bits of fabric. I don’t know if I am cutting in the most economical way.

I can’t bring myself to throw them away and contribute to landfill issues, so I have decided to use up every little last bit of scrap fabric I have.

So, inspired by my desire to use up all the fabric scraps, and wanting to live the most whimsical life, I have come up with quick cake banner (side note: check out another scrap fabric project here).

This is a very easily customizable project, and don’t take up much fabric at all.

Though I haven’t tried it yet, I think it would work really well in a Fairy garden too!

Questions about this project

What fabric should I use for this project?

I have only ever used quilting cotton remnants. If you have different fabrics types, I hope you experiment! Let me know how it goes.

How much fabric do I need?

I didn’t measure the exact amount of fabric I used, but the individual flags I made are triangular, and measured 1inch at the base, and 1.5inch tall.

How long will it take to make?

This is a quick project that will take you 20 minutes at most. The only reason I think it may even take that long is wait for glue to dry.

How long is the end banner?

The length of your completed banner will vary depending on the size of your individual flags, the size of your cake, and how you want the banner to sit across the cake.

All that is left is for you to get sewing!

Items needed

  • Scrap paper
  • Writing tool (pen/pencil/marker/crayon)
  • Scrap fabric (I used cotton)
  • Fabric marking tool
  • Rotary Cutter/Scissors
  • Cutting Mat (optional)
  • Coordinating thread
  • Hot Glue Gun (or other strong glue)
  • 2 skewers
  • Additional trim of choice (optional)

Instructions

Create a template for your bunting banner. I made triangles that measured 1 inch at the base and were 1.5inch long.

Use this template to draw your banner’s flags on to your scrap fabric.

Cut out the flags, and decide which order you would like them in.

Leave a long tail on your sewing machine. Sew your flag using a 0.25inch seam allowance

Sew 1-2 stitches with no fabric under your presser foot.

Carefully place the next flag under the presser foot and continue to sew.

Repeat until your banner is as long as you want it to be.

Leave a long tail and snip off.

Decide where on a dowel you would like to place your banner. Squeeze a dab of hot glue on the dowel, and then wrap the excess thread at the end of the banner around the hot glue to secure it in place.

(optional step) Hot glue some additional trim to your banner for some extra pzazz!

Congratulations! You just made a cake banner!

Now all you have left to do is put this on a cake and celebrate!

If you are going to have cake, you may as well treat yourself to a cuppa. Check out my masala cha post!

If you do decide to make this project, I would love to see your spin on it! You can email me at [email protected] or find me on FB, Insta, TT or YT. Use hashtag #cozymagichome so I can find you easily!

Until next time, I hope the coziest, magical day.
