Does your home have a particular decor style?

We are currently in our ‘trying to desperately keep our home clean’ phase.

On a serious note, we bought our first home in July 2022, and thankfully, the changes we need to make to the house are mostly superficial.

But decorating is… it’s a lot.

Since being married, my husband and I have lived in places where either we were unable to make major decorating choices, so I’m really not used to having to design my own space. I’ve usually just focused on functionality.

I’ve been on Pinterest, but I usually find myself feeling pulled in several style directions if I don’t go in looking for something concrete.

So after A LOT of Googling and Pinteresting (I have decided they are both now words), I decided to take a break from looking online, and decided to journal about it instead.

This led me to create the ‘Exploring Your Home Décor Style’ workbook. It is a guided journal which will help you figure out how you want your home to look and feel.

If you are interested in getting hold of the workbook, check out this post!

But the reason for this blog post today is that through journaling, I realized I wanted something a little more cozy and whimsical for my home, and it led me to exploring some of the styles down below.

In my experience, looking up the below listed styles usually shows up images of a lifestyle aesthetic, a opposed to an interior design style. And I think that is why I am interested in them. I have been focusing more how I want my home to feel, instead of how I want it to look.

Ultimately, I believe there is no right or wrong way to decorate, and knowing me, my home will end up being a mish-mash of all the styles below.

Still, it was fun to research this!

(side note: If you are looking for more traditional decorating styles, I recommend this blog post by Vivien at Posh Pennies who goes through some of the more popular decorating styles)

A decor style board of cottagecore themed rooms around the home.

Cottagecore – A romanticized interpretation of English rural life, Cottagecore is big one dreamy, cozy aesthetic. Think earthy tones, second hand furniture and lots of natural elements. Kind of reminds me of The Burrow from Harry Potter, or The Shire from the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.

Grandmacore – Very similar to Cottagecore, but I think has more ‘old people’ stereotypes. There appears to be more of a D.I.Y. element to Grandmacore (e.g. baking, cooking, gardening etc), and a lot more color. I associate it more with Tasha Tudor, and/or Little Red Riding Hood’s Grandma’s home.

Steampunk – A mash up of ‘ornate Victorian style and robust industrial design’[i] , Steampunk provides some interesting visuals in the interior design world. Things that are usually hidden (e.g. pipework) is exposed and made an integral part of the design, which plays nicely against some of the more polished elements in Victorian design (e.g. leather sofas).  Think Wild Wild West, but I also think Sherlock’s flat (BBC Series) was Steampunk-esque.

themed rooms around the home.

Dark Academia – As the name states, dark academia has is associated with a darker neutral palette, with some earthy tones thrown in. The aesthetic has gothic elements, but is largely associated with Ivy League schools and Oxbridge universities. Dead Poets Society and The Queen’s Gambit are great examples of dark academia style.

Do you have a decor style from this list?
