It’s only August, but we are hosting Thanksgiving this year, so I am determined to get my kitchen decorated by then!

The ‘bones’ of the kitchen are great, and one of the main reasons why we bought this house was because it needed no major renovations.

Having said that, I’ve been using my Room Decorating Planner (btw, you can get a copy of the planner for free! Just sign up for monthly email updates here), I realized the kitchen needs a fair amount of TLC.

So with that in mind, I have decided to share pictures of my kitchen as it currently is.

I almost started to apologize for how it looks, but you know what? It is a real kitchen. I took these pictures at the end of a long day. I wish I could have a HGTV ready kitchen, and maybe one day I will. But currently, that isn’t the season of life we are in.

Anyway, without further ado, here are a few pictures of our kitchen from last night.

This is our kitchen. It looks a little chaotic in these pictures, but it really doesn’t feel like it when we are in (to me, anyway). It is a fairly decent size

Favorite Things in my Kitchen

I realize I am repeating pictures, but I love this giant blackboard contact paper and cork tiles in our kitchen.

We initially stuck it up as a temporary command center, but I actually love it now. I will still be keeping this concept when we update our kitchen, though it will probably look different.

Ignore the dining table for now, but I quite like having my spices and pantry on display.

I’m definitely an ‘out of sight, out of mind’ girl, and I have found that having my food and spices out means less food waste.

I’m not sure how aesthetically pleasing it is to other people, but it works for me and my family.

Things that are okay in this kitchen

These are my floor tiles.

They are easy to clean, and I don’t mind the design.

But I have always had a thing about black and white checkered floor tiles. So if I find a way to make it work (which knowing me, I will) the flooring my change too.

THINGS THAT ARE GOING TO CHANGE

The wall color is definitely going to change!

As we have a green living room, we initially were going to bring that theme into the kitchen too, but can’t agree on a shade.

I then decided to try some faux brick tiles, and they look horrible.

I’m glad I only bought one as a sample!

I’ve decided on having off white walls. Mostly because I end up decorating so much, that I don’t want to have to worry about coordinating all my random decor.

I really am not a big fan of this corner cabinet. It is awkwardly placed, and I could never make it work.

I am also struggling to dismantle it, so am waiting for my husband’s next day off to get him to try.

I’m hoping to replace it with some shelving, which I will turn into my baking station!

This is a close up of my countertops and backsplash. It appears to be some sort of laminate.

It isn’t terrible, and is structurally sound, but looks dated.

I want to replace the backsplash with subway tiles, or possibly brick veneer. I’m struggling to decide between the two.

For the countertops, I watched this YouTube video by Lia from Southern Yankee DIY. She makes the painting the countertops look doable! She seems to be a product called Retique It. I’m going to have to check them out!

Those are the main changes we will be making to our kitchen, and to be fair, it is already a lot to do!

I think we have to agree on a couple more things, and then we can set up our final plan of action for our kitchen. We have been here living in this home for a year now, so I can’t wait to get things started!

Have you lived through a kitchen renovation? What survival tips do you have?

Wishing you a cozy, magical day!
