Are you looking for an easy baking activity to do with the young people in your life (or even just yourself)?

That is what today’s blog post is about!

Somewhat inspired by my tiredness and the desire to encourage and nurture my daughter’s creativity, I set up this ‘Create Your Own Monster Treat’ station.

This is a quick project that you can make even quicker by using pre-made Rice Krispies Treats. As I wanted some colored treats and couldn’t find any locally, I decided to make my own! Below is the recipe for it.

Just a note on the coloring, it was a bit of a fail. I was trying to make purple marshmallow, and while I did achieve that, I didn’t take into account that due to the amount of Rice Krispies I was using, it would need make a much deeper purple.

In the end, the treats looked like they had a very slight purple tint. I almost considered not posting it, but it still tasted good, and my daughter had so much fun making her monsters. I’m trying hard to embrace imperfection, so decided to share this project anyway!

Proof I got it purple (kind of)

Once we settled down to this project, we had a lot of fun! After making the Rice Krispies Treats, setting up this project took a few minutes, and fun (and mess) commenced rather quickly!

Rice Krispies Treats

(adapted from Kellogg’s Rice Krispies)

  • 1 stick unsalted butter
  • 16oz bag mini marshmallows
  • 7 Cups Rice Krispies
  • Few drops of desired food coloring

– Grease a 9×13 baking dish. Set aside.

– Melt the butter in a large pan (I ended up using my stock pot) on low heat.

– Once melted, add 16oz bag of marshmallow and food coloring. Keep stirring until the marshmallows have completed melted and you have achieved the color you want. The darker your color, the more it will show up on the treats!

– Remove from heat, and add the Rice Krispies. Stir until combined.

– Spread your treats out on the pre-greased baking dish. A greased spatula definitely helps with this!

– Let the treats cool (I cooled mine in the fridge for 3.5 hours).

– Once cooled, use a serrated knife to cut into the desired size and/or shape.

Monster Rice Krispies Treat Platter

Items I used for this project

  • Halloween Cup Cake Liners
  • Rice Krispies Treats (Homemade or Store Bought)
  • Monster eyes
  • Sprinkles
  • Colored Sugar
  • Icing

Fill the liners with the decoration items for monsters

Unwrap your Rice Krispies Treats and set on plate

Let your creativity take over!

Guess which ones were made by a 4 year vs a 38 year old!

Personally, I think Rice Krispie Treats go very well with Yorkshire Tea, so I highly recommend a cuppa while you are completing this activity
